In a report released on October 14, the International Energy Agency said that rapid investment in data centres, driven in part by the growth of artificial intelligence, is putting pressure on local electricity networks.

Because some proposed projects are duplicates or may never be built, planners must prepare for rising demand without assuming that every application will eventually become a real customer.

While new infrastructure can raise other users’ bills if its cost is shared across all customers, data centres that use existing capacity more fully and pay their share can also help spread fixed costs.

The report therefore recommends transparent connection rules and fair cost allocation, highlighting that the impact on electricity bills depends not only on demand but also on how power systems are planned and financed.
